It's not about how good you are, but about how many connections you have.
In a tough world, survival often calls for cunning navigation.
One of the first laws Robert Greene discusses in his book 48 laws of power is- Never Outshine The Master. Basically it talks about making people above feel comfortably superior as it will keep them happy and they will not fear us. By being in the liking of the person above you, we can slowly and steadily start reaching their level and above them eventually and when they realise, it's too late. It's a cruel game but without cruelty and selfishness you can't be successful. I learnt about this in my school life when I noticed favortism taking place. As a student I wasn't the teacher's favorite but there was one boy, let's call him Tim. Now Tim was loved by teachers and he was also the class prefect. While on one hand I was not a very respectful young boy with some amount of talent but a greater ego which made me not a very likable boy, Tim was a very generic boy but was always an almost servant like to the teachers. He did what they said even when what they said was completely useless. He was doing things and putting in work to impress the teacher and slowly but surely he was a favorite of all the teachers. They talked about him and gave his examples to others, even though he didn't have any skills . So whenever there was any event, he was an automatic favorite to talk in it, even though his skills in it was not good. Now when we look at Tim we can clearly see that he is a genius. Yes, and I was the fool. He from the starting knew that in this feild and others its never about your skill but about how many people know you. And he created an image for himself where almost everyone knew him and after a certain amount of time he had become such a favorite that his skill wasn't checked at all and all that was looked at was that he was a good boy.
The first thing I talked in the starting of this blog was nepotism. While nepotism is when you are born in a family where you get a naturally unfair advantage, with the example of Tim we can see a different side of favouritism gained by pure mind game.
While skill might give you a few gigs but at the end of the day you gotta be a little cunning in this cruel world.
